Our recent trip to Charleston SC to spend a weekend on the aircraft carrier Yorktown was one we will remember for a long time. The carrier is a floating museum dedicated to the valient effort to defend our nation during the second world war. The ship represents the acme of our nation's productivity and the most advanced technology of the early 1940s. While there we toured the ship from stem to stern, explored the submarine USS Clamagore and spent time on the Destroyer USS Laffey. One of the most interesting things we learned was how the ship's propulsion system works. It was explained by a veteran that used to work in the engine room on the USS Laffy. After listening to him tell us how it all worked we were ready to go for a lap around Fort Sumpter. We did that on the ferry and got an in depth history lesson on the boat ride over. Sunday we attended services in the hangar bay and then toured Charleston and the old slave market before heading back.
