Our recent trip to Charleston SC to spend a weekend on the aircraft carrier Yorktown was one we will remember for a long time. The carrier is a floating museum dedicated to the valient effort to defend our nation during the second world war. The ship represents the acme of our nation's productivity and the most advanced technology of the early 1940s. While there we toured the ship from stem to stern, explored the submarine USS Clamagore and spent time on the Destroyer USS Laffey. One of the most interesting things we learned was how the ship's propulsion system works.

There were 51 contestants entered in Saturday's "South Yadkin River Canoe Race", making it one of the most contested races in recent history. Of the racers 14 were scouts and leaders in Troop 448, continuing a tradition that dates back to the first race held in 1986 in which Jack Kepley made the awards out of small wooden canoe paddles and Alfred Wilson placed second in the C2 mens.
It was a spectacular finish, with scouts spinning out of control on the long infield slope. As they crossed the finish line it was hard to make out who got there first in the dark but since all contestants were 448ers it is unmistakable which Troop won.
